Golf Adds Redstone Challenge to Spring Schedule

March 21, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Houston golf team returns to action Sunday morning when it competes at the National Invitational Tournament.

Hosted by the University of Arizona, the tournament also features Baylor, California, Colorado State, Kent State, New Mexico, SMU, TCU, Texas, UTEP, Tulsa, UNLV and Wyoming. The tournament begins at 8:30 a.m., (CDT) Saturday with the first 36 holes on the 7,094-yard, par-72 course at Omni Tucson National Golf Club.

The final 18 holes will be played at 8:30 a.m. (CDT), Monday. Live scoring for both days will be available at GolfStat.com.

The Cougars enter this weekend's tournament after finishing 15th at the Border Olympics, an event hosted by UH in Laredo.

At that tournament, sophomore transfer Matt Eschenburg - playing as an individual - led the Cougars with a score of 223 to tie for 20th. Junior Jackie Lindsey tied for 26th with a 54-hole total of 224.

Junior Ben Moser continues to lead the Cougars with a 73.17 scoring average, while Lindsey ranks second at 75.28.

A year ago, Moser, Kent State's David Markle and Tulsa's Nicholas Geyger won medalist honors at the National Invitational Tournament after firing an 8-under-par 208, while TCU grabbed team honors with a score of 10-under 854.

The Cougars placed sixth at the 2008 event.
