HOUSTON - University of Houston senior James Ross was selected to compete for Europe during the Palmer Cup in an announcement made Thursday morning on Golf Channel's Morning Drive. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-28 at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England.
In 2013-14, Ross ranks second among the Cougars with a 72.04 scoring average and stands third on the team with 14 rounds of par or better. He has posted six top-10 finishes this year and finished second on Tuesday during the rain-shortened Reunion Intercollegiate after firing back-to-back, even-par 72s.
This will not be Ross' first international competition this season. In late March, he sat out of his collegiate schedule to compete for Scotland on Team Europe during an international friendly match against Team Asia/Pacific for the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy in Bangalore, India.
Ross becomes the third Cougar to compete in the Palmer Cup, joining Andy Sanders and Simon Robinson, who both played in 2000.
Ross joined Jon Rahm of Arizona State (Spain), UCF's Ricardo Gouveia (Portugal), Erik Oja of Arizona (Sweden), Illinois' Thomas Detry (Belgium) and Pep Angles of Central Arkansas (Spain) as the six European players selected by the Palmer Cup Ranking.
UAB's Paul Dunne (Ireland) and Grant Forrest of San Diego (Scotland) were committee selections. Louis Tomlinson of UCLAN Myerscough (England) qualified by winning The R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament. Jack McDonald of Stirling University in Scotland was the pick of Team Europe Coach Andrew Coltart.
The United States was represented by Cameron Wilson (Stanford), Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans, Robby Shelton of Alabama, Oklahoma State's Wyndham Clark, Brandon Hagy of California and USC's Rico Hoey. Bryson Dechambeau of SMU, Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglia and Alabama's Trey Mullinax were committee selections, while Stewart Jolly of LSU was selected with Coach Steve Desimone's pick.
