HOUSTON - Jason Russell has joined the University of Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as an assistant sports performance coach.
Russell will work closely with Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke and Women's Golf Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell to create training programs that allow the Cougars to move more efficiently and effectively. He also will design and implement all aspects of the conditioning, mobility, agility and strength programs.
He also will supervise Houston Men's Basketball's strength and conditioning program for new Head Coach Kelvin Sampson.
Russell, who is a native of Corsicana, Texas, comes to Houston after working for the last year and a half as assistant strength and conditioning coach at California. While in Berkeley, Russell directed the strength and conditioning program for the Women's Gymnastics team and assisted with the Football program.
He joined the Louisiana Tech strength and conditioning staff in June 2011, working with the Men's Basketball team and assisting with the Football program.
Prior to that, Russell served as a volunteer assistant coach and intern at Sam Houston State for nearly three years. There, he worked with the Men's and Women's Golf teams and assisted with the Football and other sports programs.
Russell was a three-year letterman on the Sam Houston State track and field team, competing in the shot put, hammer and weight throw from 2009 to 2011. He was an All-Southland Conference Second-Team performer in the weight throw as a team captain and was a member of the Southland Conference All-Academic Team.
He received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Sam Houston State in 2010 and earned his master's degree in sports performance from Louisiana Tech in 2012.
Russell is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.

2014 FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS

Houston opens the 2014 season at 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, when it hosts UTSA in the first game in TDECU Stadium.

University of Houston alumni from the last five years (2010-14) can purchase season tickets for just $125 (upper levels) and $175 (lower level) in specially designated Young Alumni sections with a multiplier of four times donations to Cougar Pride giving levels for the first five years after graduation. Single-game group ticket sales for the inaugural season in TDECU Stadium are now on sale via the Houston Athletics Ticket Office. Groups of at least 10 or more can purchase tickets starting at just $21 per person to any of Houston's seven home games, including 2014 Fiesta Bowl champion UCF, by calling the Houston Athletics Ticket Office at 713-GO-COOGS (462-6647) or by clicking here.
