HOUSTON - University of Houston Men's Golf star James Ross and Tennis standout Celia Fraser were recognized Tuesday afternoon with the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.

One student-athlete in each American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport was selected by the league's Academic Affairs Committee. The honor was based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.

Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 were eligible.

ABOUT James Ross
In 2013-14, Ross earned PING All-America Honorable Mention honors after tying for third at the NCAA Championships in late May and was named to both the PING All-Central Region and All-American Athletic Conference teams. He finished second among the Cougars with a 72.21 scoring average and added 17 rounds of par or better.

In 11 tournaments, he earned eight top-20 finishes, including a second-place showing at the rain-shortened Reunion Intercollegiate and finished the 2013-14 season ranked No. 22 nationally by Golfstat.

Ross helped lead the resurgence of Houston Men's Golf, which rose as high as No. 7 midway through the season and finished at No. 9 in the final Golfstat poll.

He also competed on the international stage. In late March, Ross represented his native Scotland for Team Europe vs. Team Asia/Pacific in Bangalore, India, in an international friendly match for the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy. In late June, he won three of his four matches to lead Europe to an 18.5-11.5 victory over the United States in the Palmer Cup at Walton Heath Golf Club.

Off the course, Ross received his bachelor's degree in liberal studies with an emphasis in French, global business and economics in May. He also took part in several Men's Golf events with patients of the Renal Unit at Texas Children's Hospital

ABOUT Celia Fraser
Fraser was a leader on the court and in the classroom in 2013-14 for Houston Tennis, as she posted her fourth consecutive winning season while taking home ITA Scholar Athlete honors for the third straight year.

The senior captain went 13-12 in overall action, while winning a season-high four straight matches from Oct. 13 - Nov. 4, 2013, as she helped guide the Cougars back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1998 campaign and for just the third time in program history.

Fraser was also part of a Cougar squad that was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the third season in a row. In addition, Houston earned the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for the third straight season. The honor recognizes programs that have Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores within the top 10 percent of the country within their respective sports.

In all, Fraser collected 11 individual academic awards throughout her four-year collegiate career. She graduated in May with a degree in business administration with a focus in finance.
