HOUSTON (Sept. 6) - With a host of talented returning players from a team that finished fourth at the NCAA National Championships last year, including senior Andy Sanders as the country's No. 7 ranked individual overall, the University of Houston golf team was rated as the No. 5 team in the country in a preseason poll of the nation's head coaches released on Wednesday (Sept. 6).

Houston, a storied golf program that has won an unprecedented 16 national championships in golf, is again tabbed to be in the hunt for the NCAA title. The Cougars tallied 241 poll points for fifth overall, just for points away from a preseason ranking in the Top 3.

Houston is led on the links by Andy Sanders, a senior from Merritt Island, Fla., who qualified as an amateur for the U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach last summer. Last August the All-America candidate and defending Conference USA individual champion was also selected to represent the United States in the prestigious Palmer Cup, a college version of golf's Ryder Cup.

Sanders will be joined on the 2000-2001 UH roster by six returning letterwinners and four newcomers. Junior Wade Ormsby returns as regular player and he is joined by fellow Australian countryman Brad McIntosh, a highly-touted true freshman on the team.

Houston opens up its season on September 9 at The Ridges Intercollegiate Invitational in Johnson City, Tennessee.
