Men's Golf Tied for Fourth after First Day at NCAA Baton Rouge Regional

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- The University of Houston golf team rebounded from a rocky start to finish tied for seventh among a prestigious field of 14 teams at The Ridges Intercollegiate Sunday evening in Jonesborough, Tenn., in the team's opening tournament of the 2000-2001 season. The No. 5 ranked Cougars posted two of the best rounds of the tournament with a 286 Sunday and a six-under par 282 in the second round Saturday, but the team opened the tournament with an 18-over par 306. Individually, senior All-America candidate Andy Sanders led the charge Sunday with a six-under par 66, the best round of the day and tied for the best 18 holes of any competitor all weekend. The native of Merritt Island, Florida, finished in a tie for 16th place shooting rounds of 74-76-66=216 to finish even-par for the tournament and eight shots off the lead. Junior Wade Ormsby likewise rebounded from a 79 in the opening round with a combined one-over par for the final 36 holes. Two sophomores and two freshmen (one as an individual) also saw action for Cougar golfers.
