HOUSTON - After an impressive performance at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, University of Houston junior Wesley McClain was honored Wednesday morning as the Conference USA Golfer of the Week.
McClain, who received the first weekly award of his career, led the Cougars and finished fourth in his season debut on the 7,234-yard, par-72 course at Shoal Creek Country Club. He opened the tournament with an even-par 72 and followed that with a Houston season-low-round 68 that featured six birdies.
With a two-round score of 140, the Diboll, Texas, native set a new 36-hole low and topped his previous best finish of seventh at the Lone Star Invitational on Oct. 17, 2010.
Marshall's Korakot Simsiriwong was named the C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week.
Following the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, the Cougars return to action in early October with a pair of tournaments. As a team, Houston will compete at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on Oct. 7-9 in South Bend, Ind.
Several student-athletes also are scheduled to compete as individuals at the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State at Raven Nest Golf Club in Huntsville, Texas, on Oct. 8-9.
