Golf Returns to Action at Windon Memorial Classic
Sept. 27, 2002 HOUSTON - After a two-week absence from the competitive course, the University of Houston golf team returns to action next week at the Windon Memorial Classic. The Cougars are scheduled to compete on the 6,750-yard, par-72 course at Glen View Club against a field featuring UC Davis, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Southern, Kent State, LSU, North Florida, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Stanford and host Northwestern. Eight of the 13 teams in the field were ranked in the final top 50 of the 2001-02 Golfweek/Sagarin Index. The Windon Memorial Classic is a 54-hole tournament with 36 holes played on Monday, beginning at 7:45 a.m. and 18 holes on Tuesday. Senior Brett Callas has been the Cougars' most consistent player during the 2002 fall season. Through the first two tournaments, the Huffman, Texas, native has compiled a 74.0 scoring average and finished 18th at the Sooner Invitational last weekend after shooting even-par or better in each of the first two rounds. Other Cougars scheduled to compete are 2002 All-Conference USA performer Simon Robinson, Chris Cureton, John Wine and freshman Zach Mowbray, who will be competing in his first collegiate event.
In their last tournament, the Cougars tied for sixth place at the Sooner Invitational on Sept. 16-17. Both Cureton and Robinson led a UH charge in the second round, shooting UH season bests 68s.
