HOUSTON - After posting his second straight career-best finish, University of Houston junior Matt Eschenburg was honored Wednesday afternoon as the Conference USA Golfer of the Week.

It was his first weekly award.

Eschenburg, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, and a product of The Woodlands High, posted a career-low 216 at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic earlier this week to finish in a tie for fifth place. It was the second straight week he posted a career-best finish after tying for 14th place at the season-opening Kansas Invitational.

He opened the 54-hole event with a 73 and lowered his score by one stroke during the remaining two rounds. With his performance, Eschenburg helped lead the Cougars to a sixth-place team finish.

Tulane's Linn Gustafsson and Kristina Merkle of Tulsa shared the league's Female Golfer of the Week award.
