Houston Signs Two to National Letters of Intent

Nov. 14, 2017

HOUSTON -- Christopher Chomyn and Braxton Watkins became the newest members of the University of Houston Men's Golf program after signing National Letters of Intent on Tuesday, Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke announced.

Chomyn and Watkins will compete as freshmen during the 2018-19 season and have four years of eligibility.

"The quality of the athlete has increased dramatically during the last decade," Dismuke said. "Coaches are seeing bigger, stronger, faster kids joining their programs, and both of these guys fit into that mold."

Chomyn --who measures 6-foot and 200 pounds -- comes to Houston after competing at Irvine High School in Irvine, Calif.

In June, he fired scores of 67-66 in the final two rounds to win the Corey Pavin Invitational at CrossCreek Golf Club in Temecula, Texas, for the first Toyota Tour Cup victory.

He continued his stellar play later that month when he posted a score of 3-under 213 to capture medalist honors at the Insperity Invitational/Patrick Reed AJGA Championship presented by Callaway Golf. Competing on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club, Chomyn drained 10 birdies and two eagles to win his first AJGA Tournament.

Following his junior season in 2016-17, Chomyn was named to the Orange County Register All-County Team.

"We found Christopher late in recruiting process when we played at The Woodlands Country Club this summer," Dismuke said. "He has a tremendous amount of physical ability. Christopher hits the ball hard, and he hits it very straight for as hard as he hits it. Christopher is one of the most impressive guys I have seen hit the ball, and we are excited to have him as a part of our future."

Checking in at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, Watkins joins the Cougars after an award-winning prep career at Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas.

Braxton is extremely physical with a lot of athletic ability. He has played several different sports during his career, so I know he can come in and do what we ask him to do physically.

As a junior during the 2016-17 season, Watkins tied for eighth individually to help lead Pleasant Grove to a fifth-place finish at the Class 4A State Championships. He captured the Class 4A Regional Championships individual title with a score of 139, including a First-Round 68, at Van Zandt Country Club in Canton, Texas, in June.

In February, he made birdie on the second hole of a playoff to capture the individual championship at the Lobo Invitational at Pinecrest Country Club in Longview, Texas.

In October 2016, Watkins won on a the second hole of a playoff to earn medalist honors at the Texas High Tiger Classic at Texarkana Country Club.

As a sophomore during the 2015-16 season, Watkins posted a score of 147 to finish fifth at the Class 4A State Championships at Onion Creek Club in Austin, Texas.

He qualified for the State Championships after posting a score of 143, including a First-Round 68 to finish second, at the Class 4A Region II Tournament.

As a freshman in 2014-15, Watkins helped lead the Hawks to a third-place finish at the State Championships.

The Cougars will take a break before opening the spring season at their own All-American Intercollegiate on Feb. 16-18, 2018, at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
