Golf Signs Two to National Letters of Intent during Early Period
Nov. 15, 2010
HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team became a little larger Monday afternoon with the signing of two high school seniors to National Letters of Intent, head coach Jonathan Dismuke announced. Colleyville Heritage product Kyle Pilgrim and Harlingen High South's Roman Robledo will join the Cougars for the 2011-12 season as freshmen. Both are expected to challenge for playing time quickly and have bright collegiate futures, Dismuke said. "The main thing we needed to do was sign talented student-athletes. I wanted to continue to increase the talent pool, so we could have more depth," Dismuke said. "I like the size and athleticism in this class, and both players have the potential to be great here." A year ago, Dismuke brought Jesse Droemer, Curtis Reed, Wesley McClain, Bryn Flanagan and Greg Schmaus into the Cougar program. Through the team's first three fall tournaments, that class ranks as the most impactful freshman group in NCAA Division I golf in 2010-11.
During the summer, he finished third at the AJGA Bob Estes Abilene Junior with a score of 216, including a second-round 69. Pilgrim also finished third at the Junior PGA Championship Section Qualifier - Northern Texas with a two-round total of 139, including a 68 in the first round, and added a fifth-place showing at the LJT Spring Preview.
"Kyle is extremely smart and extremely talented. He has great athleticism and great touch," Dismuke said. "He can come in and make an immediate impact in our program. I look forward to having Kyle in our program next fall."
Entering his senior season, he won more than 20 Valley high school tournaments and was a perfect 10-0 as a junior. During the summer, he was crowned the boys' champion at the South Texas Junior Classic for the second straight season and finished in a tie for first place at the Texas Junior Masters Tournament in July. Robledo also earned second-place finishes at the Junior Championship Qualifier at The Woodlands, at the Texas Junior Masters at Hyatt Hill, at the Texas State Junior Championships at Horseshoe Bay Country Club and at the AJGA Houston Junior at Sweetwater Country Club. "Roman has a great golf swing with a lot of power, and he is very sound fundamentally," Dismuke said. "He has the potential to be as good as anyone who has ever played at the University of Houston."
