Former University of Houston track and field star Sam Jefferson passed away on January 20 in Waco, Texas following a long illness. Jefferson, an UH letterman from 1991-94, won the 100 meter dash at the 1994 NCAA Championships. He was a three-time Southwest Conference champion who won the 100 meters in 1992. He also won the 100-and 200-meter titles at the 1993 SWC Championships to join Carl Lewis, current UH head coach Leroy Burrell, Kirk Baptiste and Rich Edwards as the only Cougars to win the sprint double.

A native of Waco, Texas, Jefferson came to Houston after he was a standout sprinter at Waco High School.

A memorial service will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 at the Lover's Leap Baptist Church in Waco.
