    Foster Sweeps Sprint Titles; Mueller and Rzepecki Claim Victories

    Houston, Texas- The University of Houston men's and women's track and field teams finished in fifth place at UH's Tom Tellez Invitational on Saturday, March 31, 2001.

    Robert Foster and Jeff Mueller combined to win three events to score 30 of Houston's 65 total points. Foster won the 100 with a legal time of 10.40 seconds and he came back to win the 200 meters as he edged Texas A&M's Brandon Evans by .004 seconds at the finish line, Foster finished the race in 20.751 compared to Evan's time of 20.755. Foster's time of 20.76 seconds is a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

    Mueller won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 11.75 inches. His teammate, Adam Callahan, finished second with a jump of 6 feet, 9.65 inches.

    Two other Cougars recorded second-place finishes in the meet as Juan Cardenas posted a time of 3:51.69 in the 1500-meter run and Toartou Kargou finished the 3,00-meter steeplechase in 9:44.78.

    Senior Jackie Rzepecki opened the running events at the meet with a victory in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase as she provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in a time of 10:54.48.

    Sophomore Lauren Smith finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.89 and Monica Reyna finished second in the women's 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 18:32.71. Reyna finished ahead of her teammate, Heather Howse, who was third in a time of 18:37.79.

    Julie Perez also finished in third place in the women's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:40.43.
