Amanda Barksdale returns this season to her alma mater and a program which she helped lead to a school-record number of wins and a NCAA Tournament appearance as a senior, as she begins her first year on the Cougar bench as an assistant coach. In addition to her on-the-floor coaching duties, Barksdale's role with the program includes monitoring the academic success of the team's student-athletes and overseeing the program's travel arrangements.

Prior to her return to the Houston women's basketball program, Barksdale spent the previous two years as a physical education teacher at River Oaks Baptist School, instructing students from kindergarten to eighth grade. She served as the school's head coach for the seventh and eighth grade girl's basketball, field hockey and lacrosse teams. During her time at River Oaks, Barksdale also helped coordinate the school's community sports camps.

From 2004-06 before moving to River Oaks, Barksdale spent two years at Presbyterian School, teaching both physical education and coaching women's basketball and volleyball. Included as part of her coaching duties were the responsibilities of opponent scouting and preparing game strategies.

During her one season on the court at UH in 2003-04, Barksdale was a part of a Cougar team that notched a school-record 28 wins and captured both the 2004 Conference USA regular-season and Tournament titles. From her center position, Barksdale made 20 starts and played in all 32 games, finishing with a team-leading 51 blocks while averaging three points and three rebounds per contest.

She and her teammates were selected as the No. 3 seed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament and collected the school's first NCAA Tournament victory by defeating Wisconsin-Green Bay in the first round.

Prior to spending her final year of eligibility at a UH, Barksdale played three seasons at Notre Dame, helping the Fighting Irish capture the 2001 National Championship. During her time in South Bend, Ind., Barksdale ranked among the blocked shots leaders in the Big East Conference, finishing third in the league with 58 as a sophomore.

Barksdale earned her bachelor's degree in sociology in 2003 and received her master's in early childhood education from UH in 2005.

She is single and lives in Houston.
