Tuscaloosa, AL - Behind season high three point total the University of Houston Lady Cougars grabbed a win over the University of Alabama 76-70 Saturday afternoon at Coleman Coliseum to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Nicole Oliver was 4-6 from behind the arc to lead the Lady Cougar three point barage as Houston hit 12 of their 23 three point attempts. Oliver's three first half long range jumpers helped Houston open up an 11 point lead at the half.
Alabama (8-4) closed the Lady Cougars lead, which they held the entire game, late in the second half, but clutch free throw shooting by Houston helped hold off the Tide comeback. Joann Overstreet hit two free throws with 9.4 seconds remaining to put Houston up four and Sancho Lyttle blocked a three point attempt which led to a Chandi Jones layup at the buzzer to seal the win.
The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Jones who finished with 20 points while Overstreet added 15 points, Oliver poured in 14 and Lyttle finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Crimson Tide found its offense in the second half, outscoring the Lady Cougars 47-42 behind the hot shooting of Monique Bivins and Dee Merriweather. Merriweather hit six of seven shots in the second half and finished with a Crimson Tide high 17 points while Bivins finished with 15. Natasha Gamble and Lauren Hill also finished in double digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Cougars will be in action again Monday afternoon when they take on Middle Tennessee State in Murfeesboro Tenn at 2 p.m.
