HOUSTON, Texas - A 10-2 run in the last three minutes of the first half gave the University of Houston women's basketball team a lead it never relinquished as it knocked off UCF, 64-50, to open up Conference USA play at Hofheinz Pavilion Friday.

UH (4-8, 1-0 C-USA) held the Golden Knights (2-11, 0-2 C-USA) without a field goal for a 6:53 span that started at the 3:07 mark of the first half. During that time, the Cougars had a 12-2 scoring advantage and led by 12, 40-28, with 16:15 left in the game.

UCF was within seven, 47-40, with 11:43 left in the game, but the Golden Knights only mustered four field goals in the final six minutes of the game and were outscored 17-10 by UH down the stretch. It was UCF's fifth-straight loss and 11th in the past 12 games.

UH finished the game with just eight turnovers, the third-best single-game performance in UH history, and the first single-digit turnover game since Dec. 20, 2000. In that game, UH gave the ball up just six times in a loss to Hawai'i. The Golden Knights ended the night with 22 turnovers which UH converted into 22 points.

Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) had her first career double-double, marking the third-straight game a UH player has hit for double digits in two statistical categories. She finished with 24 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Hawkins was 7 for 12 from the field and 4 for 7 from behind the arc. She hit three-straight three-pointers on three consecutive possessions in the first half and also was a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity stripe.

Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) ended the night with 11 assists and a season-low two turnovers while Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) had 11 points and a career-best seven boards, finishing in double-figures for the third-straight game. Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

UH trailed by five right out of the gate, but a 14-3 run that spanned just over five minutes had the Cougars up 16-10 with 11:31 left in the opening half. A 7-0 UCF run put the visitors up by one, 17-16 with 9:10 left in the opening half. UH tried to press the advantage, but led by no more than five, setting up the furious run to end the half.

UCF's LaShay King netted her first career double-double, leading the Golden Knights with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

UH looks to make it two in-a-row on Sunday, facing off with Southern Miss in Hofheinz Pavilion at 2 p.m. CST. The Golden Eagles are 4-9 and 1-1 in league play after dropping a 77-64 decision to Rice on Friday night.
