STORRS, Conn.--- The UConn Huskies proved why they are regarded as the top team in the land, as they went on to defeat the Cougars, 90-40, Tuesday night at Gampel Pavilion.

Sophomore forward Marche' Amerson and sophomore guard Alecia Smith each recorded 11 points to lead the Cougars, while Smith also collected a team-high and season-high tying five rebounds in the loss. Junior guard Demetria Foreman also tallied a career-best and game-high tying three steals on the night.

Breanna Stewart led all scorers, as she recorded 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, while also grabbing a game-high tying nine rebounds for UConn in the win. Morgan Tuck also went for 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and Kiah Stokes poured in 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Huskies.

Yasmeen Thompson opened up the scoring, as she put in a sweeping layup with just 30 seconds gone by in the contest to give the Cougars (4-11, 0-4 The American) a quick 2-0 advantage.

However, it was No. 1 UConn (16-0, 4-0 The American) who flexed its muscles after that, as the Huskies exploded for an 18-0 run to take an 18-2 lead with 15:27 left in the half.

Amerson snapped the scoring drought, as she swished a trey from the left corner to cut the deficit to 18-5 with 15:04 left to play in the first half.

UConn continued to shoot the ball at will, knocking down 20-of-37 first half shots for 54.1 percent in the half, eventually ballooning its lead to as high as 35 points, before the Cougars cut it to a 52-19 deficit at the half.

The Houston bench was able to make a large contribution in the first 20 minutes of play, accounting for nine the Cougars' 19 first half points.

Despite the score, the Cougars never gave up, as they battled all the way down to the end, as Houston outscored UConn 9-1 over the final 5:32, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers by Amerson and Smith.

The Cougar defense also held UConn to just 13-of-29 shooting in the second half for just 44.8 percent.

Houston now looks ahead to this Saturday, as it will return home to take on Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m. CT inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
