NEW ORLEANS - Sophomore point guard Porsche Landry capped a 16-point second half performance by sinking a running lay-up with just 10 seconds remaining on the clock, punctuating a 70-68 road by the University of Houston women's basketball team over Tulane on Friday at Fogelman Arena. The victory kicked start Conference USA play for the Cougars and snapped a four-game winless streak.

Landry led all scorers in the game with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting for the Cougars, who improved to 7-7 for the season and 1-0 in league play. The Houston native also set a career high with three 3-point baskets in the contest.

For the Green Wave the loss was their first in their last 10 games and dropped their record to 11-3 on the year with a 0-1 mark in conference games.

Joining Landry in double figure scoring for the Cougars were junior guard Brittney Scott, who scored 15, and sophomore guard Roxana Button, who chipped in 10 points. Junior forward Courtney Taylor was reached double-figure scoring and narrowly missed her 30th career double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Houston got the first five points of the ballgame, as a Button 3-pointer highlighted a 5-0 run right out of the gate for the visitors. The opening lead would quickly evaporate as the Green Wave found a 5-0 spurt of their own, knotting the game at 5-5.

The Tulane lead stretched to as many as eight in the opening period, 38-30, on a jumper by Danielle Nunn at the 1:54 mark, but the Cougars closed the half on a 7-0 run. Landry cut the lead to a single digit and gave UH momentum heading into the intermission by nailing a long distance jumping with just seconds remaining in the opening period, sending Houston to the locker room trailing 38-37. Taylor was solid for the Cougars in the first half, scoring six points and adding seven rebounds, while Scott tallied eight points.

After a back-and-forth opening few minutes of the second half, Tulane rebuilt its largest lead of the night at 50-42 with 13:46, but the Cougars circled the wagons and rallied.

Houston, paced by outstanding guard play from Landry and Scott, used a 13-4 run to take its first lead of the season half, 55-54, on a jumper Scott at the 6:54 mark.

The Cougars surge continued and allowing them to build their biggest advantage of the night at six, 64-58, on an old fashion three-point play by Lesslee Mason with 3:57 remaining.

Tulane remained resilient and managed to get back-to-back 3-pointers from Roshaunda Barnes and Tiffany Aidoo to knot the game at 68-68 all with just 40 second remaining.

However, it was Landry who gave the game its final points and sent the home fans home disappointed when she drove the lane to hit a lay-up with just 10 ticks left in the contest.

Houston is back on its conference opening weekend road trip Sunday when the team heads west to El Paso, Texas, for a battle with UTEP. Tip off between Cougars and Miner is set for 2 p.m. (CST) from UTEP's Don Haskins Center.
