Senior Duo Leads Houston to 78-59 Victory Over Southern Miss

HOUSTON - Courtney Taylor registered her 50th-career double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Lesslee Mason tied a career high with 20 points to help lead the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 78-59 win over Southern Miss, Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars improved to 12-4 overall and remained undefeated in Conference USA play with a 3-0 record.
Taylor notched her 10th double-double of the season, going 6-of-9 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. The Crockett, Texas, native also handed out three assists and swiped two steals.
Mason just missed another double-double performance with eight boards, including four on the offensive glass. Mason was 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe, while posting three assists a team-high three steals.
Porsche Landry also scored in double figures with 10 points and a game-high six assists in 32 minutes of action.
Brittney Scott added nine points to climb into 10th spot in Houston history with 1,265 career points.
The Cougars ran out to a quick 12-2 lead in the first five minutes and would never trail in the contest. In 120 total minutes of play in Conference USA action this season, Houston has only trailed a total of 1:43.
Landry converted a layup in traffic with five seconds remaining in the first half to give the Cougars their biggest lead in the opening frame at 41-23 going into the break.
Southern Miss (6-10, 1-2) cut a once 24-point deficit down to 15 with 10:41 remaining, but wouldn't get any closer as Houston rattled off 10 consecutive points to push the lead back to 67-42.
Houston shot 40 percent (25-of-63) from the field, 10 percent (1-of-10) from 3-point land and 66 percent (27-of-41) from the free-throw line, while limiting the Lady Eagles to just 33-percent shooting.
The Cougars forced 27 Southern Miss turnovers on 12 steals, while handing out 17 assists. The Lady Eagles won the rebounding battle by a 52-47 margin.
Houston will face a tough road test in its next action against UTEP on Sunday in El Paso, Texas.
