Taylor Tops 1,000 Career Points as Women's Basketball Beats UAB
Jan. 24, 2010
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In just her 74th game in a Cougar uniform, junior forward Courtney Taylor reached the 1,000 career point plateau Sunday, as she scored 16 points in a University of Houston women's basketball team 63-62 road win over UAB at Bartow Arena. The victory gets the Cougars back to .500 on the year at 9-9 while improving their Conference USA record to 3-2. UAB (10-7; 4-1 C-USA), meanwhile, fell from the ranks of the conference unbeaten as it was the final C-USA team to suffer a loss in league play. Taylor, in addition to becoming the 19th member of the UH women's basketball 1,000 career point club, recorded her 33rd career double-double. The Crockett, Texas, native led the Cougars with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds. Joining Taylor in double figure scoring for the Cougars were sophomore point guard Porsche Landry, who ended with 12, and junior guard Brittney Scott, who contributed 11. Guard Jala Harris led all scorers with 26 points for the Blazers. The first half was a tight affair featuring eight ties and six lead changes and neither team leading by more than a half dozen until the final play of the period. With just three ticks remaining, junior Jasmine Johnson's hit a running jumper that made the score 33-26 and sent them to the locker room with the biggest lead of the half. Johnson's shot highlighted a 10-0 run to end the opening period. Just as they had ended the game's opening period, the Cougars retook the court after halftime in total control of the game. Houston scored the period first 11 points to make it a 21-0 run overall and give them their biggest lead of the night at 44-26 with 16:38 to play. The Cougar defense was the story of the half's opening minutes as they forced the Blazers to miss their first seven shot attempts of the period and did not allow a basket until the 14:43 mark of the period. UAB recovered from their early shooting woes to mount a big rally. The Blazers, led by Harris, made 12 of their next 19 shots after the sluggish start and used a 32-13 run to make it a tight contest down the stretch. During the run, UAB was able to tie the game on a lay-up by Harris with 5:33 to play and took their first lead since 2:22 mark of the first half on a Tamika Dukes free throw with 3:59 remaining. The home lead reached three on a lay-up by Erica Simpson with 2:10 to play, but a jumper from the free throw line by Taylor cut the lead to just one at 62-61 with just two minutes to play. The lead again changed hands as Landry sliced through the UAB defense and successfully converted a lay-up with just 25 seconds remaining. UAB retook the ball on the final possession of the game and the Cougars needed a big defensive stand to secure the victory. They got that defense from junior Brittany Mason who matched up with Harris and forced a poor shot that was rebounded by Taylor. The Cougars are back in action on Thursday when they host Tulsa in a 7 p.m. C-USA matchup at Hofheinz Pavilion.
