The University of Houston's women's basketball team battled for the program's 500th win against Texas A & M Corpus Christi Islanders 48-46 on Tuesday night. Despite the Lady Cougars giving up 29 points in the first half, the held the Islanders to only 17 in the second half of play. Shannon Steele nailed a three-pointer with one tenth on a second left on the first half play clock to put the Lady Cougars within three of the Islanders. The Islanders defense held Sancho Lyttle to 6 points the entire game. Joann Overstreet steeped up to the challenge and responded with 15 points and played the last seven minutes with four fouls. Crystal Simpson blocked Islander's Nicole Duncan's three-point attempt for the win. Duncan had 14 points for the Islanders. Duncan is a Houston native from Dulles HS. Terra Andrews added 16 for the Islanders. Other notable Houston performance was Kiki Harris with seven and Daphne Andre provided seven off the bench. Houston moves to 15-5- on the year and 5-2 in Conference USA play. Houston returns home on Saturday to face St. Louis. The Saturday game is a 7 p.m. start, and post-game Chandi Jones will have her No. 13 retired, along with 2004 C-USA championship team ring ceremony.
