HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 53-percent shooting effort from Tulane on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 74-56 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars dropped their third-straight contest to fall to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA play, while Tulane improved to 16-4 on the season and 5-2 in league play.

Freshman guard Alecia Smith led Houston with a game-high 23 points, draining a career-high seven 3-pointers on 11 attempts in 35 minutes of action. Smith found her touch in the second half, scoring 20 points off a 6-of-9 effort from distance.

The Cougars cut the lead to three at 21-18 when Campbell grabbed a steal and took it coast-to-coast for a layup and Smith followed with a pull-up 3-pointer at the 8:00 mark.

Freshman guard Marche' Amerson kept the deficit within five points with a trifecta with four minutes remaining but Tulane connected on its fifth 3-pointer of the first half for a 10-point advantage at the break.

The Green Wave stormed out of the locker room, draining back-to-back 3-pointers to jump out to a 41-25 lead.

Houston failed to score for the first four minutes of the second half, as Smith found junior center Yasmeen Thompson under the basket at the 15:54 mark for the Cougars' first points to cut the deficit to 21 points.

Tulane held its largest lead at 27 points with 10:48 remaining in the contest when Smith went off from beyond the arc, draining four 3-pointers in just over three minutes, but Tulane was able to answer to keep a comfortable distance.

Amerson and junior forward Marissa Ashton chipped in six points apiece for the Cougars, while freshman center Tyler Gilbert added five points, three rebounds and a block in 10 minutes of action.

Tulane was 31-of-59 from the field (53 percent) and connected on 10-of-20 shots from long range, while the Cougars shot just 33 percent (22-of-66) from the field.
