HOUSTON, Texas - Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) tallied 18 second-half points as the University of Houston women's basketball team overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to knock off Rice, 75-62 in Conference USA action at Autry Court on Friday. Houston (9-11, 6-4 C-USA) won its second-straight overall and swept the season series from Rice (8-12, 4-5 C-USA). The Owls had their two-game winning streak stopped as Houston won its third-straight overall from its Harris County neighbors, sixth in the last seven meetings and moved the all-time series to 32-5 in favor of the Cougars. Trailing by four at the half, 33-29, Houston was quickly down 12, 46-34, as the Owls pulled off a 13-5 run in the opening four minutes. The Cougars did not back off and turned on the defensive pressure. It paid off moments later as a jumper by Jackson at the 14:19 mark started a 16-0 UH run that saw Rice go 0 for 6 from the field and commit five turnovers. Back-to-back buckets by Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) closed out the run with Houston leading 52-48 with 10:16 left. The teams traded points and a six-footer from Emily Fryters (Adelaide, Australia/Concordia College) at the 8:53 mark started a quick 6-0 run that ended with the play of the night, courtesy of Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS). With 7:23 left in the game, Hawkins had the ball on the left block and dished it behind her back to a waiting Meyers who laid it in. The bucket gave UH a nine-point cushion, 61-52 with 7:23 to go.
Rice was back within five after a 6-2 run of its own, but a pair of triples from Jackson and Hawkins on consecutive possessions closed the door and a layup by Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) at the buzzer sealed the 13-point win. Jackson led all players with 24 points and was 7 of 13 from the field and a perfect 4 for 4 from behind the arc in the second 20 minutes. She added eight assists and career-best five steals. Hawkins finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Glover added 18 points, six rebounds and four steals. Of Glover's 18, over half came on fast-break layups. UH held a 14-11 advantage on fast-break points for the game. Twenty-one of Houston's points came off of 20 Rice turnovers. The Cougars finished the night with a school-record-low five turnovers. UH eclipsed the previous record of six, set against Hawai'i on Dec. 20, 2000. Despite being outrebounded by a 44 to 36 margin, UH held its own on the offensive boards, tying Rice's output with 13 apiece. Those 13 offensive boards were turned into 11 second-chance points and a 32-24 advantage on points in the paint. A layup by Hawkins knotted the game at six apiece with 17:40 left in the half. After that basket, Rice went on a 16-0 and Houston was held without a bucket for nearly six minutes (5:55), missing all nine shots it took during that span. The lull gave the Owls a 20-8 lead with 11:00 left in the opening stanza. The Cougars held it together and came up with a 15-0 run of their own over the next 5:25, picking up UH's first lead of the night, 23-20 with 5:17 left in the half. The final 4:45 was a bit of a shootout as the teams traded the lead twice with Rice gaining the four-point halftime margin after a three-pointer by Kadie Riverin with eight ticks left on the clock. Lauren Neaves paced the Owls with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Valeriy Berezhynska also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Samantha Stovall added 13 points and five assists. Houston closes out the weekend a day late, facing a Monday tilt with Marshall at 7 p.m. CST in Hofheinz Pavilion. The game was switched to a Monday tipoff as to not conflict with Super Bowl Sunday. |
