Lady Cougars slip past scrappy Green Wave in three overtimes

HOUSTON - All American Chandi Jones tied a career high 39 points Sunday afternoon as the University of Houston Lady Cougars edged the Tulane Green Wave 83-78 in three overtimes at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The three overtimes was a first for the Lady Cougar program and the win in extra time gives Houston a 2-1 record in overtime games this season. The victory boosts Houston's record to 19-3 and 8-1 in Conference USA play.
Jones nailed a three pointer with 25 seconds remaining in the third overtime to give Houston a five point cushion, then stole the ball with 12 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Lady Cougars. She also added seven rebounds, five steals and five assists in 53 minutes played, the most of any player from either team.
"I'm just glad we came away with a win," Jones said. "Winning the game in three overtimes was really big for our team because it taught us that we can pull out tough games."
Despite the final score, Tulane tied an opponent record against the Lady Cougars, grabbing 64 rebounds. Alabama grabbed 64 boards against Houston on December 2, 1989.
The Green Wave was led by D'Aundra Henry's 24 points while Lakethia Hampton and Cashmir White both picked up double doubles. Hampton scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while White scored 11 and grabbed 14 boards. Jami Montagino added 12 points for Tulane who fell to 8-14 on the season and 1-8 in C-USA play.
Houston had two other players score in double figures in the game. Daphne Andre scored a career high 12 points and grabbed six rebounds . Six of her points came in the overtime periods. Sancho Lyttle scored 10 points for the Lady Cougars.
Houston will be in action again Friday night when they take on the Charlotte 49ers in Charlotte N.C. at 6 p.m. The 49ers sit one game back of the Lady Cougars in the Conference USA standings at 7-2 in conference play.
