Women's Basketball Falls 81-73 To Tulsa In Final Minutes

TULSA, Okla. - Houston gave up a five-point halftime lead and dropped an 81-73 decision to Tulsa, in Conference USA action at the Reynolds Center Thursday.

Houston (7-16, 4-9 C-USA) was paced by 22 points from Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue). Tulsa (10-15, 5-8 C-USA) outscored the Cougars 12-4 over the final two minutes to earn a split in the season series between the two squads.

UH was held scoreless for a span of 5:27 early in the second half and outscored 12-0 during that run, giving the Golden Hurricane a 48-43 lead with 13:41 to go. The Cougars came back with a 16-10 run of their own to retake the lead at 59-58 with 7:25 to go. UH would not lead the rest of the night, but remained in striking distance, knotting the score five times in the next five-plus minutes.

The Cougars, playing with a short bench and forced to foul, failed to convert on six of their final eight possessions while Tulsa was 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the last two minutes, leading to the 12-4 closing run.

The UH offense showed signs of struggle in the second 20 minutes, shooting 13-for-42 (.31) from the field, 3-for-10 (.300) from behind the line and only getting to the free-throw line three times. Tulsa shot fifty percent in the second half and was 17-for-19 from the line. For the game, the Golden Hurricane was 21-for-28 from the free throw line while Houston made all seven of its attempts.

Sunshine Misa-Uli (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Farrington HS/Barton County CC) added her third-career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Cougars have dropped five-straight games and remain winless in 12 games on the road this season.

 

 

Houston held a 43-39 advantage on the boards, converting 21 offensive rebounds into 36 second-chance points. UH gave up just 12 turnovers, its lowest total in six games.

Tulsa's Jillian Robbins (Spring, Texas) led all players with 29 points and 12 rebounds. She surpassed the 2,000-career points plateau during the second half of tonight's game. Larissa Williams added 14 points while Valerie Siemens finished with 15 points, 12 of those coming in the second half.

The Cougars held a 41-36 halftime edge after shooting 47.1 percent (16-34) in the opening 20 minutes. Misa-Uli had 10 points, all coming in the paint and Jackson added 13. UH held a 23-15 rebounding edge, converting 12 second-chance points off nine offensive rebounds. Houston moved out to a 17-8 lead in the game's first five minutes hitting seven of its first 10 shots, including three triples.

Houston closes out a season-long four-game roadtrip Saturday at SMU's Moody Coliseum, facing SMU at 2 p.m. CST.
