HOUSTON - Sancho Lyttle scored a career high 30 points and tied a career high with 15 rebounds Friday night as the No. 18/21 University of Houston knocked off No. 11/12 DePaul University 84-75 in front of 1665 fans at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston (22-3, 11-1 C-USA) held a double digit lead for most of the second half, but a late Blue Demon run with under two minutes cut the Lady Cougar lead to six points with just 43 seconds to play. However, a free throw by Joann Overstreet with 33 seconds and a layup by Lyttle with 23 seconds sealed the win for Houston.
The Lady Cougars fed the ball to Lyttle in the post early and often in the first half as did DePaul to Khara Smith. In the opening minutes of the game Lyttle and Smith traded buckets for their team, picking up the six points apiece in the first four minutes. Lyttle finished the first half with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Smith finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds while her cousin Charlene Smith poured in another 27 points for the Blue Demons. Jenni Dant added 14 points for DePaul.
The Lady Cougars will be in action again Sunday afternon at 2 p.m. when they take on the Marquette Golden Eagles at Hofheinz Pavilion.
