HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team was plagued by first-half woes at Rice on Thursday, falling to the Owls by a score of 68-40 at Tudor Fieldhouse.
After trading baskets to open the contest, Houston quickly fell behind as Rice's Candace Ashford and Jessica Kuster drained back-to-back 3-pointers to push out to a nine-point lead.
The Cougars would then hit an extended offensive drought, failing to score for over five minutes as Rice ran out to a 17-point lead before going without any points for another four-minute span en route to a 38-13 halftime deficit.
Houston shot 25 percent (6-of-24) from the field in the first half and committed 11 of its 13 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes as Rice outscored the Cougars by a 14-0 margin in points off of their miscues.
Button, who earned Capital One Academic All-America First Team honors earlier in the day, scored in double figures for the 23rd time this season, while Lawson posted her 12th double-digit performance and the 11th in C-USA play.
Kuster led Rice with 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Christal Porter added 10 points for the Owls.
The Cougars return to Hofheinz Pavilion in their home finale against UCF at noon on Sunday in a televised contest on FOX Sports Net. Button and Michelle White will be honored pregame in the final home game of their careers.
