Nov. 3, 2004
Just two weeks from the start of the 2004-05 regular season, the University of Houston Lady Cougars hosted the local EVI.net team in their first exhibition game as they prepare to defend their Conference USA title from a year ago and had a rough start, falling by a final of 77-55 on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Hofheinz Pavilion on the UH campus.
After the game went back-and-forth in the opening 10 minutes of play, EVI pulled out to an 11-point lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first half when Sonia Chase nailed both of her free throws. In a first half riddled with fouls and turnovers by both teams, Houston narrowed the lead to ten points at 39-29, and as the clock round down, Chase nailed a three-pointer with just one second left as EV1 carried a 45-29 lead into the locker room.
EVI came out after half-time and went on a 17-6 run as it built its lead to 56-37 with 15 minutes left in regulation. Lady Cougar senior Crystal Simpson sailed in a three to cut the lead, but EV1 continued to capitalize on opportunities, making its lead as large as 25 points with less than five minutes to play.
Senior All-Conference and Wade Trophy candidate Sancho Lyttle led the Lady Cougars with 13 points on the night, while adding seven boards and three steals. Fellow senior KiKi Harris followed with nine points and five boards, while freshman newcomer added eight points.
Houston hosts one final exhibition contest against the Houston Jaguars on Nov. 13 at 7;00pm at Hofheinz Pavilion before opening the regular season against the visiting Wichita State Shockers on Nov. 19 at 5:30pm.
