    HOUSTON HEAD COACH- Todd Buchanan

On the start of the game

“I wasn’t real thrilled about it. I didn’t feel like we started the way we needed to start for the most part. They did some good things to get YT (Yasmeen Thompson) in early foul trouble. I said on the radio earlier that if someone had told me that YT and Des (Destini Texada) would play seven or eight minutes in the first half, and it would be a two point game at halftime I’d take it. That’s exactly where we found ourselves.

“I’m proud of Tyler (Gilbert) and Marissa Ashton the way they came in and filled those voids tremendously. They had a lot of success, and I was really proud for the minutes they put in. I think that’s the big difference. We’re a hybrid team right now. We have five seniors, we only have two juniors, and the rest are sophomores and freshmen. For them to step up the way they did and give us a chance to be there in the end, I was realyl happy with that.”

“At the end of the day (Savannah) Carter makes a big time shot. She won a national championship at Trinity Valley junior college, and that’s what big time players do. They make big time shots, and that kind of buried us, put the dagger in us to where we didn’t have another chance.”

On the play of Jessieka Palmer

“Jess came off the bench and played really well. She brought a spark to us. She was that trifecta where she came in and got us back in the game with a chance to win the game. She had big shots down the stretch. We just missed too many free throws down toward the end that really cost us. We had a chance to possibly get ahead, and finish them off. At the end of the day they made shots and we didn’t.”

On what needs to be improved for next game

“They have great size, and obviously their kids are athletic. I think no matter what we have to work on rebounding for sure. The other parts of it is as crazy as it sounds we’ll have to go back and continue to work on fundamental footwork. The post move, fake one way and go the other. It’s as simple as that, get them up in the air, and we have to be finishers. We didn’t finish very well tonight. Our transition game is lacking at times. We want to push the ball, and when we were doing what we were supposed to do, I felt like we were doing well in transition. We executed really well in the half court with our high screen pick and roll stuff. We have to clean some of that stuff up too.”

    SOPHOMORE GUARD- Jessieka Palmer

On how you felt about the game

“In the beginning I played a little timid. I talked to coach before the second half and I picked it up. My teammates were able to find me when I was open, and I knocked down some good shots. Overall my game was okay, but I could have done much better.”

On impact of the defense style

“With the new rules there were a lot of foul calls that we weren’t used to getting. We had to make the adjustments, but when we finally got it down it was too late. While Tee was in foul trouble, our point guard Alicia was in foul trouble. So by the time we made the adjustment it was too late, but we will be ready for it next time.”

    On improvement for next game

“We need to work on our free throws and we had too many defensive lapses. We need to come into practice ready to knock down free throws and work on defense. We need to start playing with a sense of urgency instead of waiting until it’s too late.”

    SOPHOMORE FORWARD- Tyler Gilbert

    On her game overall

“I really felt like this game coming off the bench I really wanted to bring some defensive intensity. I feel like that’s something that we need. And overall, I felt like as a team we were really starting to buy in to what our coaches have been saying.”

    On the new defensive rules

“I felt like it was important that our bench players came up like they did. Everybody came off the bench with a goal to help out the team and everybody worked together on that.”

On areas of improvement for the team

“I think we really need to work on free throws. Free throws overall.”
