BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Led by a 27-point effort from junior guard Brittney Scott, the University of Houston women's basketball team avoided an unlucky start to the season on Friday the 13th, defeating Gardner-Webb 86-64 at Paul Porter Arena.

In addition to Scott's banner evening, junior forward Courtney Taylor was effective, collecting her 26th career double-double by contributing 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Fellow junior Lesslee Mason narrowly missed a double-double of her own, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Roxana Button represented the third Cougar starter in double-figure scoring with 11 points for UH, which shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) on the night.

Houston (1-0) sought to the take control of the game in the opening minutes as it broke a 4-4 tie with a 6-0 run to leave the Cougars with a 10-4 advantage and 14:23 remaining on the clock.

Scott, who made 6-of-12 field goal attempts including four from long distance, started to heat up midway through the period. The Orange, Texas, native drained 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the visitors a 21-12 lead at the 11:20 mark of the period.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the Cougars holding a slim advantage throughout the period but unable to pull away to send both teams to the locker room with UH by the count of 37-34. During the session, the Cougars made 16-of-33 shots for a solid shooting percentage of 48.5, compared to GWU's 34.3 shooting percentage (12-of-35).

In the opening half, the Cougars starting backcourt combined to score 22 of the team's 37 points with Scott and Button leading the way with eight points apiece. The Houston guards, however, were also plagued with foul problems as a pair of early fouls sent Landry and Scott to the bench with two early fouls.

It was during the second half when the Cougars began to pull away, outscoring the Runnin' Bulldogs 49-30, paced by Scott's 19 points. Much of the damage was done during a stretch of just over six minutes in which UH put up 21 points to just eight from GWU, leaving the visitors with a 69-48 advantage with 8:25 to play.

Much of the damage Scott did on the night came from the free throw line where she was 11-of-12. Overall, however, the Cougars struggled from the charity stripe, making just 19-of-34 shots.

The season's opening road trip for the Cougars continues next week as they travel to Arlington, Texas, to face Texas-Arlington in a 7 p.m. contest. Houston will hit its home court for the first time during the regular season two days later as Thursday it host Oregon State inside Hofheinz Pavilion at 7 p.m.
