SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -A poor shooting night doomed the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 53-48 loss to Cal Poly, Thursday at Mott Gym.

Houston (1-2) shot 22.8 percent (13-for-57) from the field tonight and 3-for-15 (.200) from behind the arc. The Cougars also had 24 turnovers and only three blocks.

Cal Poly (2-1) won its second-straight game behind a game-high 17 points from Lisa McBride and 14 from Megan Harrison.

The Cougars took a 42-39 lead with 7:13 left after Cobilyn Hill (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) scored a pair of free throws and Twiggy McIntyre (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Kansas State) sunk a jumper from the free-throw line.

That would be the last field goal on the night for the Cougars as they went the final 7:13 with only six points coming off free throws. A three by the Mustangs' Ashlee Stewart with 5:31 left put the game away.

Houston trailed 28-22 at the break after a cold-shooting first half. Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) downed a jumper in the first minute of the game and the Cougars would not knock down a field goal for the next 8:38 seconds, enabling Cal Poly to take a 12-6 lead.

UH's freshmen led a 16-7 run that pulled the lead down to three, 20-17, after a triple by Megan Morton (Winnsboro, Texas/Winnsboro HS) at the 3:41 mark. During that span, UH had four freshmen on the floor, along with Jackson.

The Cougars made one field goal in the final 3:30 of the half and trailed by six heading into the locker room.

Morton finished with a career-best 11 points in 19 minutes. McIntyre also finished with 11, the only two Houston players in double figures. Jackson added eight points and eight rebounds, snapping a 24-game streak scoring in double figures.

Brittany Mason (Orange, Texas/Orange HS) played a career-high 26 minutes and responded with nine rebounds and two assists.

Houston returns home to play Middle Tennessee, Monday at 7 p.m. CST on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion.
