Scott, Taylor Lead Cougars to Hard-Fought Win Over UTA, 78-74
Nov. 17, 2009
ARLINGTON, Texas - Junior guard Brittney Scott tied her career-high with 27 points for the second straight game to open the 2009-10 regular season, leading the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 78-74 win on the road Tuesday over UT-Arlington at Texas Hall. Scott followed up her impressive opening act of 27 points in last Friday's season-christening victory over Gardner-Webb with a memorable encore against the Mavericks. The Orange, Texas, product made 7-of-17 field goals, including five from long distance, to tie her personal scoring mark which she has now posted three times in her career. Junior forward Courtney Taylor also played a leading role Tuesday night, continuing to climb the Houston career double-doubles list by notching her 27th career double-double. The Crockett, Texas, native finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Early shooting woes plagued the Cougars, who were shooting less that 30 percent from the floor through much of the first half. UH found itself trailing the home standing Mavericks by as many as 10 at 22-21 with 7:26 to play in the first half. Houston's two-headed scoring monster of Scott and Taylor were quiet for the first 15 minutes of the game's opening act, but the duo began to regain their scoring touch in the waning moments of the period. Scott, who did much of from the charity stripe where she was a perfect 4-of-4 in the half, gave the Cougars their only lead of the half on the stanza's final play. After forcing a turnover on the defensive end, Houston was led by Scott down the floor on one final rush and junior guard made it count by nailing a long range jumper as time expired. At the intermission, Houston held a shooting percentage of 38.7 percent (12-of-31), but had converted four of their 10 chances from 3-point range. UTA, meanwhile, which shot just under 60 percent during the game's opening five minutes, ended the half shooting 13-of-29 (44.8). After scene two of the contest got underway the Cougars attempted to gain control of the match-up. Taylor's lay-up at the 16:47 mark put Houston up by six, 40-34, but the Maverick came charging back. UTA battled back to take a three-point lead 55-52 on a lay-up by Kiarra Shofner with 9:20 left in the contest. The game continued to be a back-and-forth affair leading to the Mavericks holding a one-point advantage 61-60 with 5:41 to play before a 7-0 run by the Cougars, spearheaded by Scott's two 3-pointers, put UH ahead for good. Tuesday's hard-fought performance featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes to give Houston its second road win of the season. UH did not register its second road win of the season till Jan. 9 last season. Sophomore guard Roxana Button, who hails from nearby Coppell, Texas, scored 10 points for the Cougars, while classmate Porsche Landry tied her career-high by dishing out seven assists. Following their two-game road trip beginning the 2009-10 campaign, the Cougars will finally open the curtain at home on Thursday when they host Oregon State in a 7 p.m. contest at Hofheinz Pavilion.
