IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Houston women's basketball team tipped off the 2003-04 season against the Gonzaga Bulldogs Friday night at the KCRG-TV 9 Hawkeye Challenge hosted by the University of Iowa, with a 66-54 win over the Bulldogs.
After a slow start in the first half the Lady Cougars found their rhythm in the second half behind the hot shooting hand of Chandi Jones who scored 16 of her game high 25 points after halftime. Jones is now just 10 points away from 2,000 points in her career.
Houston also received a major boost from junior Sancho Lyttle who took over in the post in the second half scoring 15 of her 19 points. Her offensive outburst combined with her game high 10 rebounds gave Houston the opportunity to break open the back and forth battle with Gonzaga.
Holding onto a four point lead at 45-41with 8:56 remaining in the ball game, the Lady Cougars went on a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 10 points. The Bulldogs were never able to close the gap to less than seven points as the Lady Cougars defense stiffened.
Jones led all scorers in the first half with nine points, while Joann Overstreet's fade away jump shot to end the first half gave Houston a 28-24 lead as the two teams headed to the locker room for the half. Overstreet finished the game with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Cougars will take on the winner of the Iowa-Butler game Saturday at 7 p.m. for the tournament championship.
