Women's Basketball Postgame Quotes

Recap |  Final Stats

HEAD COACH Todd Buchanan
On what he took away from the game
"The biggest thing I take out of this game is that we really grew up. We started another freshman, Alecia Smith, tonight. She answered the bell, had a big night, and had 14 huge points for us. What impressed me the most about her is she played 35 minutes, had one turnover and is a true freshman. That right there is any coaches' dream."

On senior guard Porsche Landry
"Porsche is back. She kind of forced the issue a couple of times here and there, but she shook it off. She has really played back to her normal game. She showed great poise."

On junior center Yasmeen Thompson
"Yasmeen Thompson is our warrior. She is everything to us."

On finishing tonight's game
"We've been ahead before, but we've lost the lead and never had the lead back. Tonight, we did that on at least three occasions, and at the end of the day we found a way. We always say `you have to find a way'. We finally finished one tonight. Southeast Missouri is a heck of a basketball team, and they're going to have a run in the Ohio Valley Conference. My hats go off to them."

On the decision to start freshman guard Alecia Smith
"She put us in a much better place of being able to defend and defend early. They're a little bit smaller and like to do a lot of down screens, back screens and flare screen stuff. She gave us the ability to guard that better."

On tonight's offensive rebounding
"We've been so bad in that category, but we got to the offensive glass tonight. This is our fifth game of the year and the second time to outrebound our opponent. Any time you get half of your rebounds on the offensive glass is a good thing. We finally did it to somebody else, just like what Mississippi State and Alabama did to us."

On getting the first win
"I'm happy for the staff. We did a great job scouting. I wouldn't trade our staff for anybody. I'm really proud of our kids. We were at a fragile and vulnerable state psychologically, and nothing cures anything as much as a win. This could certainly catapult us into getting on a really good run."

On hosting the David Jones Classic
"He's a long time near and dear friend, not just a coach, not just a colleague, but somebody extremely special. He had an incredible career and touched a lot of lives. This is a huge tribute to him and his life. I'm really proud that we are able to do it for his family. It's an honor."

SENIOR GUARD Porsche Landry
On the game tonight
"We played very well together. The team decided to make some rules. We came out and put those into play tonight. Being able to play more as a team was crucial for us. Being consistent was something we preached about, as well as getting more defensive rebounds. We accomplished those tonight and got the win."

On the performance of freshman guard Alecia Smith
"She really stepped up tonight and played well for us. She didn't think too much, and let her reactions take over. She was able to distribute the ball, which made the game a lot easier for everybody else on the floor."

On the game tonight
"Being able to get defensive stops was great for us. I really fed off of the defensive energy throughout the game. When the team plays great defense, my performance is a lot better. We haven't been rebounding very well lately, but tonight we did a much better job on the boards."

On getting the first win
"It feels great. It's honestly a weight lifted off our shoulders knowing we got win number one. We have another one tomorrow, so we'll be ready."

On finding out about being in the starting lineup
"The coaching staff told me in practice that I would be starting. I just wanted to come out and play as hard as I could. I wasn't worried about how many points I would score, I just wanted to get the win for my team. We aren't satisfied, and are going to come back tomorrow and try to get win number two."
