HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston Lady Cougar basketball team improved to 5-0 Sunday afternoon with an 85-40 win over the Alcorn State Lady Braves in the final game of the Houston Classic Tournament at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Lady Cougars took a few minutes to warm up, but once they got hot they pulled away from the Lady Braves, who could not slow down hot shooting Chandi Jones. Jones scored 15 of her game high 25 points in the first half while Sancho Lyttle added another 15 points for Houston.
Houston finished with three players in double digits scoring as Lyttle finished with 17, point guard Joann Overstreet finished with 11 to go along with Jones' 25. Jones also passed out seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
Alcorn State was hampered by the Lady Cougars defensive pressure all game, shooting just 26.9 percent from the field for the game. The Lady Braves were led in scoring by LaToya Johnson who finished with nine points while grabbing eight rebounds.
The Lady Cougars are to their best start since the 1991-92 season when the Lady Cougars opened with nine straight wins. They will be in action again Wednesday night when they travel to Georgia to take on the University of Georgia Bulldogs at 6 p.m. in Athens, GA.
