ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Houston women's basketball team suffered it's first defeat of the season Wednesday night, falling to the Georgia Lady Bulldogs 65-52 at Stageman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.
After falling behind 14-2 to begin the game, the Lady Cougars fought their way back with strong defense to within four points at halftime at 29-25. Houston caused 11 first half turnovers by the Lady Dogs, eight of which came on steals.
In the second half the Lady Cougars Closed the gap to two points on several occasions, but could not overcome Georgia, who answered every Houston run.
The inside play of Kara Braxton, who finished with a game high 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs, helped Georgia outscore the Lady Cougars in the paint 28-14. Alexis Kendrick added 10 points for Georgia while Christi Thomas grabbed a game high 13 rebounds.
Houston (5-1) made just 18 of 59 field goals, 30.5 percent from the field, while the Lady Bulldogs hit 24 of 56 for 42.9 percent.
The Lady Cougars will be in action again Sunday afternoon when they take on nationally ranked Purdue at Hofheinz Pavilion at 1 p.m.
