HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston women's basketball team was within minutes of upsetting No. 7 Purdue University Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion, but the Lady Cougars fell just short as the Boilermakers escaped with a 66-63 win.
Purdue Seniors Shereka Wright and Erika Valek took over for the Boilermakers in the final five minutes of the game to help lift their team past Houston. Wright scored seven of her 21 points in the final 4:28 of the ballgame, starting with a 3-pointer to put Purdue up 58-54.
The Lady Cougars (5-2) held a four-point lead at halftime and was able to hold onto the lead until the 9:19 mark of the second half when Purdue's Aya Traore hit a jump shot to put the Boilermakers up 49-47.
Houston was led by Chandi Jones and Sancho Lyttle who combined to score 47 of the Lady Cougars 63 points. Jones led all scorers in the ballgame with 24 points while Lyttle added 23 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Cougars shot just 42.9 percent from the free throw line in the ballgame, and made just one of six in the second half.
The Boilermakers (6-1) were led by Wright's 21-points while Valek added 10 points.
The Lady Cougars will not be in action again until December 19 when they travel to North Texas to take on the Lady Eagles at 7 p.m.
