Dec. 22, 2012
HEAD COACH Todd Buchanan
"Anytime you can hold a team who is 15th in the nation in scoring to 61, it's a great feeling. Today we grinded out throughout the game and found a way to win. Our containment was good, and our pressure on the ball was much better today. I was really pleased with our team."
On the difference between first half and second half
"They went to their zone in the second half, and they tried to control the tempo of the game in the second half. They did a good job on the defensive end. We only won the second half by one point. We started feeling pressure, and stopped attacking the basket. It got to the point where we were playing to not lose instead of trying to win."
On Alecia Smith and Porsche Landry co-existing
"After 11 games they are really coming together. It's all about possessions and getting comfortable with one another. It's hard when you have two or three new pieces to a team, and we have 12. When you go through things we've gone through, and then not playing for two weeks it's tough. As a team we've gone through trials and tribulations as a basketball family, and for them to come back out here and put all of that behind them for three hours is something I'm extremely proud of."
On Alecia Smith's performance
"She played a great game today. I love that kid, and she has guts and savvy. For her to play the game as hard as she does she has deserved the opportunity to get the green light on shots. Not only did she have 24 points, but she put the team on her back. She had crucial shots when we needed them most."
REDSHIRT SENIOR GUARD Porsche Landry
On the first-half play
"The first half was Cougar basketball. We played together, we shot the ball, everybody had confidence in each other and we came together and played as a team."
On second-half performance
"We had some breakdowns on the defensive end. There were some bad possessions. We came together, slowed it down and adjusted to their defense."
On her performance in the first half
"I felt like my shots were falling. I was trying to be smart and move with the ball. I had it going in the first half."
On freshman guard Alecia Smith
"She stepped up big and had a lot of big shots when we needed buckets. Her maturity level is high right now. She played well."
HOUSTON FRESHMAN GUARD Alecia Smith
On how she played today
"I came to play and just wanted to win. I did what I had to do to get us a win."
On the keys to her success
"I had confidence in myself. In practice, Porsche would give me the ball and I would feel comfortable when it was time for me to shoot."
On the difference in today's strong second half
"The difference was that we knew we had to finish strong. We haven't been finishing strong so today our mindset was that we needed to finish well as a team."
JUNIOR FORWARD Marissa Ashton
On her performance
"I just shot the ball and contributed for my team. I just tried to make the easy baskets, get every rebound and come away with the win."
On the key to the win
"I think we had a lot of energy coming into the game. We came in with a lot of intensity. That's what the game plan was. We wanted to outplay our opponent and we did that tonight."
On Texas State's zone defense
"It threw us off balance for a while, but once we got the hang of what our coaches wanted us to do, we were able to hang onto the lead."
On the play of freshman guard Alecia Smith
"Alecia was big. She hit key shots when we really needed them. That's what we needed out of her."
On the importance of the win
"It was very important. We didn't want to go on a break with this loss, and having it haunt us throughout these four days. Now we get a chance to enjoy it. It was a good win."
