CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Despite a career night from junior forward Lesslee Mason and a game-high 25 points from junior guard Brittney Scott the University of Houston dropped its third straight contest Monday night, falling on the road to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 81-76.

The setback drops Houston's overall record to an even 6-6 on the year, while the Islanders improve to 7-3.

Mason's night included her 8-of-13 shooting performance from the field for a career-best 20 points with 13 rebounds for her third double-double in a UH uniform.

The Cougars got off to a sluggish start from the floor during the early portion of the contest, misfiring on nine of their first 11 attempts from the floor allowing the Islanders to build a 11-4 lead before Scott jump started the UH offense with a 3-pointer at the 13:42 mark.

Scott's long range jumper sparked a 17-4 run that left Houston with its biggest lead of the half at 21-15 with 9:13 remaining on the clock. The Orange, Texas, native made four first half shots before a pair of fouls sent her to the bench for the final few minutes of the period.

Stepping up in place of the injured Courtney Taylor was Lesslee Mason, who made 6-of-8 first half shots to contribute 10 points to the Cougars first half efforts. The junior also joined the grow list of Cougars unavailable for health reason as she was forced out of the game following being cut above the eye. After being tended to by the UH Sports Medicine staff, Mason was able to return after halftime.

Scoring the period's final six points, the Islanders, who held a 28-16 advantage in first half rebounding, enjoyed a slim 38-36 advantage at the intermission.

After the break, Houston could never recapture the lead despite tying the game three times in the second period's first five minutes.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's lead swelled to as many as 14 at 67-53 with 4:13 to play on a pair of free throws by Jade Davis.

Houston made a valiant comeback in the game's closing minutes, slicing the lead down to three on two separate times, at 74-71 with 36 seconds to play and at 79-76 with only just nice ticks left on the clock.

Forward Elisa Beagle led the way for the Islanders with 15 points and 17 rebounds.

The Cougars will send out 2009 in style on New Year's Eve when they host TCU in a 1 p.m. contest at Hofheinz Pavilion.
