Dec. 30, 2001
Senior center Valerie Muoneke recorded her third double-double performance of the season, and her second in as many games, with a team-high 22 points and 15 boards as the University of Houston Lady Cougars dropped the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles by a final score of 73-62 on Sunday (Dec. 30) afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Muoneke shot 9-of -17 on the afternoon in tying her career high of 22 points, which she accomplished earlier this season against Jacksonville State on Dec. 16 in the Mississippi State Classic. She also added two assists, a game-high two blocks and one steal.
Joining Muoneke in double figures were sophomore Chandi Jones, who had scored 20-or-more points in each of the Lady Cougars' previous four games, with 17 points and junior Angela Curl, who shot 4-of-9--including 3-of-7 from the arc--for a season-high 18 points.
Jones added a game-high four steals while freshman Shondra Bush, second on the tam overall in assists, recorded a team-high four assists.
Despite Oral Roberts striking first with and taking an early lead, a two-point jumper by Jones with 14:43 left gave the Lady Cougars a 5-4 lead and they would never look back. They entered half-time with a 31-26 advantage over the Golden Eagles, and took over in the second half. Houston's largest lead of the day was by 15 points (63-48 and 66-51).
The story of the afternoon for Oral Roberts was Krista Ragan, who closed out the day with a game-high 29 points, 15 of which came off a game-high five three-pointers.
With the win, Houston improves to 9-3 overall on the season as they head into conference play beginning Sunday, January 6, as they host new Conference USA member TCU at 2:00pm at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Lady Cougars will then travel to TCU the following weekend on Jan. 13.
