HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston women's basketball team gave up a six-point second-half advantage and fell to the Charlotte 49ers, 80-71, in the Cougars final non-conference matchup of the season, Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

UH (3-8) led 32-28 at the half and moved its lead to six at 34-28 when Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) sank a jumper on the Cougars' opening possession of the second half. A 21-5 Charlotte (7-4) run over the next 4:50, including a 13-0 run that saw UH go over three minutes without tallying a point, put the visitors up 49-37 with 14:29 left in the game.

The run was highlighted by the 49ers Whitney Hoey who came off the bench to start the second half, hitting four of her seven threes on the way to a game-high 27 points. Charlotte's Pam Brown also added 26 points and 13 rebounds.

Houston did not fold and showed the poise of a veteran team for a time, chipping away at the visitors' lead with a 14-5 run of its own during a 5:27 stretch that ended with a tip-in by Jackson, that had UH within three at 62-59, with 3:30 left on the clock. Following a pair of free throws by the 49ers Sakellie Daniels, Kadi Creel (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) knocked down a baseline jumper with 3:22 left that again had UH down three, 64-61.

The teams traded points and Houston was still down three, 66-63, following a pair of free throws from Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) with 2:01 left in regulation. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Daniels heaved a bomb to a streaking Tameka Smith who found her way behind the UH defense for the easy lay-in. That bucket started a 6-0 Charlotte run that put the game out of reach as the visitors used a 10 for 12 effort from the charity stripe in the final 1:18 to keep the final tally at nine, 80-71.

Jackson finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, leading UH in all three categories. Hawkins added 14 points and eight rebounds while Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) dropped in 12 points.

Charlotte tallied 23 points off of 22 UH turnovers and held a slim 40-38 advantage on the glass. Jackson and Hawkins combined for 14 of UH's 22 giveaways.

Houston closed out non-conference play under .500 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, when UH was 4-7 in non-league games. The Cougars finished that season 7-21 (3-13 Conference USA). The Cougars were 36-12 (.750) against non C-USA foes in the previous four seasons.

The Cougars open up C-USA play next weekend, closing out a five-game homestand, with matchups against UCF and Southern Miss. The Cougars will face the Golden Knights for the first time ever on Friday at 7 p.m. CST while the Golden Eagles come to town for a 2 p.m. Sunday tipoff in Hofheinz Pavilion.
