Houston falls to 1-1 in conference play as the Lady Bearcats win, 63-62, in overtime

CINCINNATI, OHIO (Jan. 5) - In an offensive battle between conference rivals, the University of Houston women's basketball team fell to the Cincinnati Lady Bearcats in overtime by a final of 63-62 at Shoemaker Center on Friday, January 5.

The Lady Cougars took a 26-23 lead into half-time, and as both schools went back-and-forth in scoring in the first 17 minutes of the second half, the Houston defense shut down the Cincinnati offense in the final three minutes of regulation as the Lady Cougars came back to tie and force the contest in overtime. Freshman Chandi Jones nailed a three-point shot with 1:51 left to pull Houston within two points at 55-57, and junior transfer Valerie Muoneke put in a two-point shot with 1:21 left and tie the game at 57-57.

In Houston's first overtime of the season, Jones scored all five of Houston's points in the final five minutes. She put in a two-point basket to go up 59-57, and with the Lady Cougars down 62-59 with less than a minute remaining, she nailed a game-tying three-point field goal with 27 seconds left. A Houston foul allowed Lady Bearcat Tammy Douglas two free throws, and she nailed the first one for the Cincinnati lead.

Jones registered her ninth 20-plus point game of the year as she poured in 22 total points. Senior Monet Sykes recorded her team-high fourth double-double of the season as she scored 10 points and pulled down 12 boards. Jones added eight rebounds, ShaRonda Lasseter and Norma Noel each pulled down seven boards and Jessica Shanklin had a Lady Cougar-high five assists.

Houston's season record now rests at 8-6, and they fall to an even 1-1 against Conference USA opponents. In their next game they return to their home court at Hofheinz Pavilion on Sunday, January 7, as they host the University of Louisville at 2:00pm.
