HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team kicks off its 2009 Conference USA slate this weekend with a difficult challenge by facing the previous two conference champions on the road. The Cougars square off against 2007-08 champion Tulane in New Orleans on Friday before traveling to El Paso to face defending league winner UTEP Sunday.

The weekend will also see the Cougars (8-4) make their first televised appearance of the season on Sunday against UTEP. A national audience on ESPN2 will see the Miners host UH in a 1 p.m. (CST) contest from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso. Last season, UTEP went a perfect 16-0 in C-USA games on its way to a NCAA Tournament berth. This year, UTEP is 7-7 and 0-1 in league play, while Tulane enters the weekend 9-6 overall and 1-0 in C-USA games.

UH has gotten spectacular contributions from the core of the young team this season with sophomore forward Courtney Taylor leading the way. The Crockett, Texas, native led all of C-USA in rebounding with 11.3 rebounds per game, while ranking second in scoring (16.7 points per game) and blocked shots (1.83).

Fellow sophomore Brittney Scott has developed into a dangerous three-point threat on her way to 11.3 points per game scoring clip this season. Freshmen guards Roxana Button and Porsche Landry have made splashes in their rookie campaigns, averaging 11.5 and 9.3 points per game, respectively. Button leads C-USA in free throw shooting percentage at .804, while Landry ranks seventh in the league in assists with 2.92 per contest.
