NEW ORLEANS - After taking on a challenging non-conference schedule, the University of Houston women's basketball team will kick off Conference USA play this weekend when it hits to road to face Tulane and UTEP. The Cougars will face the Green Wave at Fogelman Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling west to El Paso for a matchup with the Miners at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Cougars are seeking to return to their winning ways after a tough stretch to close out 2009, losing four straight contests prior to New Year's Day. All that can be redeemed as Houston gets a clean slate to kick off its Conference USA schedule with its goal of capturing a conference crown and reaching the postseason intact. Junior guard Brittney Scott has continued her impressive development into one of the league's more lethal scorers, leading the Cougars with a 17.1 point per game scoring average, including six games of at least 20 points this season. In addition, junior forward Brittany Mason has been a steady contributor in the line-up during the absence of junior forward Courtney Taylor who has missed the past two games with an injury. The conference opening weekend, however, is not an easy one for Houston as Tulane is 11-2 this season while UTEP is 9-5 on the year. Fans can hear all the action from Saturday's game by clicking on the steaming audio link on the women's basketball page of www.UHCougars.com. Third-year play-by-play man Jeremy Branham will have the call from the Fogelman Arena. The Cougars are back on the road Sunday when they travel to El Paso, Texas, to face UTEP.
