Houston improves to 3-1 in Conference USA action in defeating the Lady Eagles, 66-56
HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI (Jan. 12) - In a game which started out slow for both teams, the University of Houston women's basketball team took control in the second half and finished strong with 19 points in the final ten minutes of regulation to hold off the Lady Eagles of Southern Miss and win their third C-USA contest of the year by a final of 66-56 at Reed Green Coliseum on Friday, January 12.
With Southern Miss holding a 26-24 advantage entering half-time, Houston's offense came alive. Freshman Chandi Jones, an All-Conference and All-American candidate, led the way with 22 second-half points and four defensive steals. Senior Monet Sykes scored nine points in the first half and added ten more in the second half as both girls finished the game in double digits.
Jones' 24 total points marks the eleventh time in Houston's 16 games this season that she has scored 20 or more points. Sykes extended her double-digit scoring streak to eight consecutive games with 19 total points on the night.
Senior Jessica Shanklin led the squad with five assists, and fellow senior Cathy Lida had three steals to go along with her team-leading seven rebounds.
With the win over Southern Miss, the Lady Cougars improve their overall season record to 10-6 and reach double digits in wins for the first time since closing out the 1995-96 season 12-16. The win also gives Houston three victories against Conference USA opponents to match their highest win total ever in conference play since joining C-USA in 1996-97. The win also marks the first this season that they have come back to win after being down at the half.
Houston's season record now rests at 10-6, including 3-1 against Conference USA opponents. They take on Tulane in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon, January 14, at 2:00pm. The Lady Cougars' next home game at Hofheinz Pavilion is on Sunday, January 21 as they host South Florida with tip-off scheduled for 2:00pm.
