More than 385 UH student-athletes combine for a cumulative GPA of 2.95.

Jan. 23, 2014

HOUSTON – While The University of Houston Athletics Department continually places a focus on athletic achievements, the department also fosters an equally important culture of academic excellence. That rings true again as more than 385 UH student-athletes posted record numbers in the classroom for the third consecutive semester in the fall of 2013.

Student-athletes from Houston’s 17 sports set the UH Athletics record for cumulative grade point average, raising the overall GPA to 2.95, in part by recording the best fall semester mark in department history at 2.92.

In addition to the record GPAs, a department-best 91 student-athletes were named to the University of Houston’s Dean’s List while UH student-athletes passed 13.8 hours, the second-highest total in Houston history.

On top of escalating GPAs, the academic work put in by Houston’s student-athletes has also been highlighted by recent Academic Progress Rates (APR) including the men’s basketball program recording its highest multi-year APR in program history at 946 and its highest single-year APR at 979 during 2012-13.

“Achievements within our department are celebrated not just in the field of play, but in the classroom as well, and these recent academic accomplishments from our student-athletes are worthy of celebration,” said Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades. “The hours spent by our student-athletes developing their athletic careers are equally matched by hours spent in classrooms and study halls as they prepare for the next steps in their lives.

“I am extremely proud of not only our student-athletes, but our coaching staffs and our Department of Student-Athlete Development led by Maria Peden for their diligent work in pushing our student-athletes to new heights in the classroom.”

Football, men’s golf, men’s track and field, tennis and softball all posted their best-ever cumulative GPAs after the fall semester while men’s golf and men’s track and field recorded their best-ever fall semester GPAs. Women’s track and field and baseball were just behind with the second-best fall GPAs in their respective histories.

Houston’s softball and tennis programs tied for the sport program lead with fall semester GPAs of 3.48 while the tennis program owns the department’s top cumulative GPA at 3.51, followed by softball at 3.45.

On the men’s side, golf posted the fall’s top GPA at 3.23 while track and field and baseball tied with the top cumulative GPA at 3.11.
