HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball freshman forward Marche' Amerson earned her first-career Conference USA Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced Monday.
Amerson averaged 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds last week as Houston (9-9, 3-2) split a pair of C-USA home contests against Southern Miss and UTEP. Amerson shot 43 percent (9-of-21) from the field and connected on seven of eight shots from the free throw line.
The Bryan, Texas, native registered her first-career double-double in Houston's 81-70 win over Southern Miss on Thursday, posting 15 points and career highs of 11 rebounds and three blocks. Amerson, who was 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe, snuck behind the defense and converted a crucial layup to spoil a Southern Miss rally late.
Amerson put together another solid performance on Sunday against UTEP, posting 11 points and going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in 36 minutes. Amerson drained her first 3-pointer since Dec. 22 to give Houston a four-point lead early in the second half against the Miners.
Amerson currently averages 11.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in league play and leads all freshmen on the Houston squad with seven double-figure scoring performances.
Houston will look to remain near the top of the C-USA standings this week when it travels to face league-leading SMU (14-4, 5-0) at 7 p.m., on Thursday in Dallas.
