UH Benefactor Nikki Drake to be Honored Saturday at UTEP Game
Jan. 29, 2007 HOUSTON - Nikki Drake, a longtime supporter of University of Houston athletics, was unanimously selected as UH's 2007 honoree for National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration. The celebration will take place in conjunction with the Lady Cougars women's basketball game against UTEP at 2pm CST on Saturday, February 3. Drake will be recognized at halftime and given a plaque by the Conference USA office. Houston (7-11, 4-4 C-USA) enters the week on a six-game home winning streak. Drake and her husband, Mike, have been season ticket holders for many UH sports since 1974. They are members of Cougar Pride and sponsor many Cougar women's athletics events and tournaments. The Drakes also volunteer for numerous championships being hosted by UH along with tournament and fundraising activities for the athletics department. "We're excited to recognize Nikki for all of the support that she and her husband have given to Cougar athletics over the years," UH Senior Woman Administrator Diane Hall said. "We look forward to this celebration and know that the Drakes will be there for Cougar athletics in the years to come." Recognitions and celebrations of girls and women in sports will be held annually all across the country. The U.S. Congress chartered National Girls and Women in Sports Day in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement, and recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. Thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, association members, sponsors, students, and parents across the country will show their support of the Day and of this year's theme, "Celebrating Title IX: 35 Years and Counting." NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player - and former UH Cougar - Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports. NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of the seven premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: American Association of University Women, Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, the Women's Sports Foundation, and the YWCA USA. Collectively, these organizations have been in existence for over 427 years and have a membership reach of 5.5 million girls and women.
