HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team will play the Marshall Thundering Herd at 1 p.m. CST Thursday, in the opening game of the 2007 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Aèropostale, at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa.

The Cougars (8-18), who earned the No. 9 seed face No. 8 Marshall (15-14) for the second time this season. The Herd knocked off UH 57-41 on Dec. 2, 2006 in Huntington, W.Va. Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue), C-USA's leading scorer (21.8 ppg), did not play in that game due to injury. Marshall leads the all-time series two games to none. Thursday will mark the first neutral site meeting of the two schools.

This is UH's lowest seed in the C-USA Championship since 2003. THat season, Houston entered as the No. 10 seed and lost to No. 7 Southern Miss in the first round, 71-69. The Cougars are 7-9 all time in C-USA Championship games with one Championship title, earned in 2004.

The top four seeds, Tulane, UAB, East Carolina and Rice, earned first-round byes and begin play in the quarterfinal round, which begins at 1 p.m. Friday, March 2. Following the Cougars' game on Thursday, No. 5 UTEP takes on No. 12 Memphis at 3:30, No. 7 Southern Miss and No. 10 Tulsa face off at 6 p.m. and No. 6 SMU and No. 11 UCF face off in the night cap at 8:30 p.m.

All first and second round games will be video streamed live on the internet at www.ConferenceUSA.com. Fans can also click the women's basketball championship logo on UHCougars.com to visit the Championship Central page.

No. 1 Tulane will face either Houston or Marshall in the second round. No. 2 UAB draws the winnner of the Southern Miss-Tulsa contest, No. 3 East Carolina will play either SMU or UCF and No. 4 Rice matches up with UTEP or Memphis.

The semifinals are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. Both games will be televised by CSTV. The championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. next Sunday, March 4. The game will be televised by ESPN2.

All Houston games from the C-USA Championship can be heard live on the Houston ISP Sports Network through UHCougars.com. Jeremy Branham (play-by-play) and Louis Ray (color) will call the action from courtside at the Reynolds Center.
