HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston Lady Cougars, after wrapping up their first winning regular season in nearly ten years and earning a berth to this year's Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), head out Wednesday morning for Albuquerque as they face their first opponent, the Lobos of the University of New Mexico, at "The Pit" on Thursday night.
Houston (19-12) and New Mexico (18-12) play on Thursday, March 15, with tip-off scheduled for 7:00pm (MST). Should the Lady Cougars win, they advance to the quarterfinals of the left bracket and face the winner between Pepperdine and Arizona, who also play Thursday night, at their respective home site on either March 17, 18 or 19, depending upon logistics.
The tournament semifinals for both the left and right brackets run from March 20-22 with finals scheduled from March 23-25. The WNIT Championship game will be held either March 27 or 28.
Houston is 2-1 lifetime against New Mexico, including an even 1-1 at "The Pit" in Albuquerque. The Lady Cougars defeated the Lobos, 85-68, in Albuquerque in the two schools' first meeting on December 5, 1981, fell to New Mexico by a final of 77-61 on December 19, 1998, and defeated New Mexico in their last meeting at Hofheinz Pavilion, 72-51, on November 29, 1999.
